I guess we can start with what the Bruins didn’t do. They didn’t dress Shawn Thornton, a leader, that makes others accountable on the bench and dressing room and a passionate player who has been playing extremely well of late and has tremendous chemistry with his line mates. He has more points the last two weeks than 4 top six forwards and we could have used the depth last night. They didn’t make Jordan Caron a healthy scratch and he contributed nothing in just over eight minutes of ice time. The team didn’t generate many shots, much pressure and seemed slow and lazy. Not very Bruin like at all. Brad Marchand didn’t sit out last night, but if he had, maybe we could have seen some “Swedish Mafia” time with Soderberg on his wing and Caron on the third line. We didn’t see a power play last night as the Bruins couldn’t penetrate the Wing zone with a man advantage. We didn’t see an Immortal Tuukka last night and even when we were down 4 goals after two periods, we didn’t see Chad Johnson in the third to rest Rask for Friday. We didn’t see Coach Julien stick with his lines in the third period for a change and we didn’t see a change in play when he mixed them up. We didn’t see a shutout last night as Jerome Iginla scored a meaningless goal with 2:25 left in the third and the Wings deserved a shutout and we deserved the humiliation at that point. The list could go on, player by player and what the Coach didn’t do here or there period by period. We Stank Last Night!!
Short of a serious injury, everything went wrong that could go wrong. There was no need for an octopus as the Bruins served themselves up as Turkey dinner with all the fixings. I think this game was inevitable as the Bruins have been reaping rewards of victories against questionable teams with half hearted efforts. Tuukka has been carrying them and Tuukka was not as good and his occasional bad goals once every other game, happened three times last night. Five goals could have been prevented with decent defensive play and accountability. The younger defensemen were caught up ice several times and it became a goal twice, but there were several other times the Wings by-passed a pinching Defenseman. Coach Julien needs to start making it harder on the players, I’d have a practice this morning and just skating drills. I’d also put them on a calorie count and mostly fluid diet today to flush out the sand in their feet.
I hope this was a nightmare that can be woken up from. Every team that matters gained ground last night on Boston. I know Christmas is four weeks away, but it won’t be very merry if they don’t get the message and start competing for 60 minutes every game here after.
Until Next Time !!
